My Review:

Even though I loved the Morganville Vampires Series and probably would have read this anyway just because it was written by Rachel Caine, it was actually the premise of this novel and series that made me eager to read and review this title.

In this brand new series from Rachel Caine, not only did the great library of Alexandria survive, it has flourished and become the major power in the world in the present. Set in the year 2031, in an alternate future, the owing of books is illegal and punishable by death and all knowledge is controlled by the great Library.

The story is seen through the eyes of Jess, son of a book smuggler who is ordered to undergo the training to be a scholar in the library as his father wants to have a spy on the inside. This suits Jess with his love of books and knowledge and not wanting to go into his father's business.

However right from the beginning, things are not what they seem nor is anyone he meets and suddenly the line between right and wrong is not as clear cut as it used to be and he is no longer sure who is on which side.

I loved this book from the very different premise, to the direction the story took to the characters in the novel. I found myself in the story from the beginning and intrigued as to how the story would play out.

In a well paced novel with action all the way through, I loved the intrigue of the sub plots and counter plots and the twists and turns. Some of which I saw coming and others which came as a surprise. All served, however, to make this a very compelling and exciting novel.

I love stories about libraries and books (funny that :-P) and I loved the way Rachel Caine turned the whole premise of Knowledge is Everything on its head and showed the darker underbelly of a world where knowledge surpasses everything else.

On a completely aesthetic note, I absolutely adore the covers for this novel both the paperback cover and the hard cover, of which I own both. The hard cover has been created in the style of the leather bound books of old. Even the feel of it is gorgeous! And I love the design on the paperback also.

This book combines action and adventure with a well written, incredibly intriguing story and interesting characters, none of whom are what they seem.

An awesome start to a brand new series. I give this story 4 1/2 stars

In an exhilarating new series, New York Times bestselling author Rachel Caine rewrites history, creating a dangerous world where the Great Library of Alexandria has survived the test of time.…

Ruthless and supremely powerful, the Great Library is now a presence in every major city, governing the flow of knowledge to the masses. Alchemy allows the Library to deliver the content of the greatest works of history instantly—but the personal ownership of books is expressly forbidden.

Jess Brightwell believes in the value of the Library, but the majority of his knowledge comes from illegal books obtained by his family, who are involved in the thriving black market. Jess has been sent to be his family’s spy, but his loyalties are tested in the final months of his training to enter the Library’s service.

When he inadvertently commits heresy by creating a device that could change the world, Jess discovers that those who control the Great Library believe that knowledge is more valuable than any human life—and soon both heretics and books will burn.….

TBAIK-Cover-v2

To Bear an Iron Key is the first in a new and exciting series from acclaimed author Jackie Morse Kessler.
Five years ago, the young witch Bromwyn refused a gift from the powerful fairy king. Tonight, on Midsummer, that decision comes back to haunt her. When her best friend Rusty picks the wrong pocket, he and Bromwyn are all that stand between their village and the rampaging fairies who have pushed through the World Door. If they cannot outwit the fairy king and queen before the World Door closes at sunrise, the friends will lose everything—their village, Bromwyn's magic, and Rusty's life.
From To Bear an Iron Key by Jackie Morse Kessler: "Bromwyn turned to face the burning fields. Reaching deep inside of herself, she closed her eyes and touched the core of her power, the place where her magic lived, where it connected her to all of Nature. She held onto that magic, let it fill her almost to the bursting point, and then she cast it out onto the fields. It blanketed the rows of spelt, and she felt as it rode the wind—Air—and then touched the grain—Earth—and then sizzled around the fire."

The-Emissary-Cover

Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king’s army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death.
When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path.

So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be only a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face -to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret.

To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls. He joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short-lived when they discover that the dark clouds, undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.

Review: Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass #4) by Sarah J Maas

Title: Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass #4)
Author: Sarah J Maas
Published: 1 September 2015
Publisher: Bloomsbury Sydney
Source: Bloomsbury Sydney
Reviewed: Sapphired Dragon
Rating: *****

My Review:

I am not entirely sure that words can describe how much I adored this book. I seriously devoured it not able to get enough.

I can honestly say this was not only everything I hoped it would be but infinitely infinitely more.

The story starts about 4-5 weeks after the end of Heir of Fire and Celaena Sardothien/Aelin Galathynius has just set foot one back in Rifthold and she is back with a purpose.

It was amazingly easy to slip right back in the world of Erilea and to pick up where the story last left off. Right away, I needed to know everything about the characters I had been waiting so impatiently to revisit and Ms Maas did not disappoint. Characters from both the series proper and the previous novellas feature prominently in this novel which in many ways helps complete this instalment as Ms Maas begins to thread previously seemingly stand alone threads together.

Ms Maas writes her characters so wonderfully well. They are vibrant and they come alive and make you feel so much for them that whenever they do anything dangerous - which lets be honest, is really the entire book ;-)- I had my heart in my mouth scared about how they were going to come out at the other end. Every twist, every turn had me hanging on the edge of my seat in worry of what might happen to *my* beloved characters.

That being said there were some characters that insisted on annoying me for a good portion of the first part of the book *cough* Chaol *cough* but even when they were being annoying, you couldn't help but love them.

And the story itself? Sarah J Maas weaves a story like no other. There are layers and twists and turns, sub plots and threads that weave together and others that seem to stand alone randomly...until they are needed when they tighten the story and pull it together just right. There is so much in this story and I am in awe at the mastery of Ms Maas to be able to hold the multitude of different threads in her head and pull on them with such perfect timing to deliver what is easily the best instalment so far.

With action a plenty the whole way through, this book had me deep in its thrall from beginning to end and I can't wait for more!

Bring on Book 5 and 5 stars for an amazing read!

Review: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews

Title: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Publisher: Allen and Unwin

My Review:

I went in to this book not knowing too much about it but having heard good things nonetheless and was incredibly pleased with the result as I found this to be a very entertaining read.

Whilst quite different to a lot of what I have been reading lately, I loved the voice and the off beat perspective of the main character which injected humour into an already fun read.

Greg S Gaines describes himself as a slightly overweight pasty white Jewish boy and his philosophy on life is to be mildly friendly to all groups at his high school but not recognised as belonging to any one group and so to avoid being on any one's or group's radar ever and this is how he intends on spending his senior year.

However when his mother forces him to spend time with Rachel, a girl he maybe sorta pretended to date back in Hebrew school, who has just being diagnosed with Leukaemia, he finds his nicely carved niche as being unmemorable slowly slipping away.

What I like about this novel is that whilst it doesn't take itself too seriously, it still nicely balances with the somewhat serious topics of the book.

The characters are all richly drawn and I could easily picture them in my head and see them interacting at a high school and I especially loved the refreshingly unfiltered thought process we constantly see in Greg's head.

I also loved the writing in this novel. The story itself was well paced and I zoomed through it and I found the writing style both easy to get into and to move through as I got further into the story.

This novel is a humorous, entertaining and fun to read and I can't wait to see how it will all play out in the movie being released next month.

I am so glad I chose to read and review this novel and I give it 4 stars :-)

Stacking The Shelves #32

Welcome to Stacking The Shelves! Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga Reviews and is a meme to share those books, both print and e-book, that have been added to your shelves in the last week/s.

So its been forever since I last did a stacking the Shelves and I even drafted a monster stacking the shelves post about a month ago which I never quite finished but rather than try and finish that one with all the books of the last few months.

I have decided to start fresh and just feature the books that arrived in the last week or 2 instead because they really haven't been too shabby!

Also fell into a bit of a book slump throughout July so didn't do as much reading as I hoped but I have received some awesome ARCs over the last few weeks.months so I have a mountain of good reading ahead of me.

With a little luck, I hope to post my reviews of Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman and Me, Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews in the coming week and If I am really good Insidious by Dawn Metcalf and Risk by Fleur Ferris also.

What are you reading this week?

She flees on her wedding day.
She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor's secret collection.
She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.
She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.
The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can't abide. Like having to marry someone she's never met to secure a political alliance.
Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles #1) by Mary E Pearson
Intrigue abounds in this hotly anticipated sequel to The Kiss of Deception!
Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape. Desperate to save her life, Lia's erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar's interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen.
Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to Lia, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be barbarians. Now that she lives amongst them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country... and her own destiny.

The Veil (Devil's Isle #1) by Chloe Neill
Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil's Isle.

Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused. Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head. But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or else New Orleans will burn.
